Neurostimulation
Florida Hospital Neuroscience Institute offers numerous approaches to managing chronic pain. Refractory neuropathic pain, one of the most intractable and difficult types of pain to treat, often can be reduced or alleviated through neurostimulation techniques. Most prominent among them is spinal cord stimulation (SCS), previously called dorsal column stimulation. The goal of SCS and other stimulation techniques for pain such as peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is to cover the affected area with pleasant paresthesias (often experienced as light tingling or buzzing). Spinal cord stimulation is most commonly used to treat lower extremity pain from spinal pathology such as recurrent disk herniation or failed back surgery syndrome.
