Neuroendovascular Surgery

Over the past few decades many surgical subspecialties have moved from traditionally open procedures towards more minimally invasive approaches. With the advantage of improved technology and smaller more maneuverable devices, more delicate procedures such as neuroendovascular surgery have become common practice.

Neuroendovascular surgery is a specialty within the fields of radiology and neurosurgery. Neuroendovascular surgery is a minimally invasive technique performed by threading catheters through an artery or vein in the leg, allowing the surgeon to diagnose and treat the problem without an incision. This procedure is commonly used to treat neurological diseases and disorders such as arteriovenous malformations, stroke, brain aneurysms, and brain tumors. The advantage of neuroendovascular surgery is a less invasive approach to the lesion that often translates into shorter recovery times and more effective therapy.

Neuroendovascular procedures include management of intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, tumors, intracranial and extracranial arterial stenoses, and arterial fistulas.
