Spinal Disorders
Your spinal cord contains the nerves that carry messages between your brain and body. The cord passes through your neck and back. There are many problems that affect the spine which are known as spinal disorders, including: scoliosis, spinal cord abscesses, tumors, trauma, muscular atrophy and injury. Scoliosis is a curving of the spine either from the middle or sideways. Spinal cord abscess is inflammation and the collection of infected material (pus) around the spinal cord. Spinal muscular atrophy is a group of inherited diseases that cause progressive muscle degeneration and weakness.
Spinal cord trauma is damage to the spinal cord that may result from direct injury to the cord itself or indirectly from damage to surrounding bones, soft tissues, and blood vessels. A spinal tumor is a growth of cells (mass) within or surrounding the spinal cord. A spinal cord injury is very serious because it can cause paralysis below the site of the injury. When someone has a spinal injury, additional movement may cause further damage to the nerves in the cord and can sometimes mean the difference between life and death. Because spinal disorders have a variety of causes, treatment will vary depending on the specific disorder and the degree of severity.
