Dystonias

Dystonia is recognized by uncontrolled, twisting or slow movement -- usually in large muscle groups -- that leads to involuntary contractions of the head, limbs, trunk, or neck. It may also be known as Choreoathetosis. Dystonias may be caused by a number of conditions, including cerebral palsy, encephalitis, drug side effects, hepatic encephalopathy and Huntington’s chorea. The abnormal movement may be reduced or disappear during sleep, but it is worsened by emotional stress. Home care involves getting adequate sleep and avoiding excessive stress. In severe cases, take safety measures to avoid injury. Treatment involves a detailed physical examination of the nervous and muscular systems with prescribed therapy related to the underlying cause.
