Ataxia
The uncoordinated, unsteady, coarse, jerky motion of the trunk or the limbs due to lack of muscle control is called Ataxia. It can develop as a result of congenital defects, stroke, multiple sclerosis, heavy metal poisoning, alcohol or drug use or following viral infections such as chicken pox. Safety measures around the home are essential to protect those affected. In the home it is important to eliminate clutter, leave wide walkways, and avoid throw rugs or other objects that might cause slipping or falling. Patience is essential for family members who should encourage those with ataxia to participate in normal activities as much as possible. Take time to demonstrate ways of performing tasks that focus on the afflicted person’s strengths. Treatment usually involves detailed neurological and muscular examination. Diagnostic tests may include blood, balance as well as CT and MRI scans of the head.
